Capoeira has made a huge impact in Brazil and around the world. It’s a rich art form, including both music and movement, with a deep history. It both creates and relies on a sense of community, which takes shape in many ways.
Capoeira is a conversation, a series of questions and answers, between the student and the master and between all practitioners. Through capoeira we connect with music, with the past, with our own bodies, and with others. Capoeira creates a safe space to deepen all these connections.
Mestre Cabeçao (Julio Arruda dos Santos) has been my teacher from 2014 to present and from the very first day we’ve met, and without a doubt, I’ve seen his dedication and passion for capoeira through his teachings. His eye for detail and willingness to explain every single movement and concept has made me understand capoeira in ways like no other. He knows how to make training sessions fun and he also knows how to make it intense which is a great mix for students to always keep motivated. At all times he shows his professionalism in every aspect of his profession. Not only is he a great teacher but he’s also an inspiration to me with his beautiful and technical style of capoeira when he plays. Many times you see teachers that can only teach but in fact he can do any and everything in capoeira really well which shows that he can be a mentor to anyone at all skill levels. Outside of the world of capoeira, he is a trustworthy person, a great friend and also a brother that I can always depend on. He goes out of his way to ensure that the people around him (new or old friends) are comfortable and respected at all times. Mestre Cabeçao would always and forever be my teacher as long as I am alive and well enough to play capoeira.
